General Summary:

This is the second level in a four-level career path. This position is responsible for leveraging project management skills, tools, and techniques to lead initiatives ranging from targeted to national in scope. This person will be a key player on Sales Communication and Distribution Operations team, working with leadership and teams across our Home Office and national sales organizations to influence and deliver on initiatives that drive significant company growth.

Project activities include, but are not limited to, establishing clear and achievable objectives, planning and directing people to reach objectives while balancing competing demands for quality, scope, time, and cost, and adapting to different concerns and expectations of stakeholders. A professional project manager should be able to manage a project without extensive knowledge of the subject matter.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Delivers results for targeted to national project initiatives within established timeframes and quality measures.
  • Utilizes basic project management skills and the corporate standard system development methodology (or other industry methodology) to manage assigned projects.
  • Consults with business leaders to translate a project idea into a defined project with goals, objectives, and scope
  • Identifies resources needed, negotiates with people managers as required to lead project teams, ensuring clarity of project roles and responsibilities, so that all project plans are completed within defined timeframes, meeting objectives and strategic goals.
  • Develops and implements communication and reporting mechanisms to manage issues, risks, and timely delivery of initiative results. Translates project goals/objectives into a defined future state and project success measures that can be understood by project stakeholders, project team and others.
  • Ensures business needs and objectives are effectively captured in functional and non-functional business requirements for a system and/or process/workflow.
  • Oversees business requirements to meet expected business solutions and trace delivery of requirements through testing to final implementation, with mentoring by a more experienced project manager, as needed. General understanding of business requirement management and quality management to meet expected business solutions.
  • Manages project quality through activities such as conducting appropriate reviews, obtaining approvals, and taking corrective action, when necessary, with mentoring by a more experienced project manager, if applicable.
  • Ensures that project documentation is complete, current and Knowledge Managed (KM) appropriately.
  • Proactively identifies barriers and resolves issues, determining contingency plans (executing as needed), while mitigating risk. Escalates issues to appropriate audiences for awareness and/or additional support.

Leadership

  • Proactively establishes and maintains cooperative, productive partnerships on current projects/deliverables, with additional guidance as needed.
  • Promotes the benefits of change and act as a catalyst for change within the organization, as well as adapts to change imposed by others.
  • Organizes and directs the activities of the project team. Prioritizes tasks to meet deliverables and commitments on time. Ensures that project member’s time and experience is well utilized. Recommends alternatives/options to minimize any schedule delay.
  • Shares project experience/knowledge and mentor others to help build project management skills

Job Specifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with three years of project management or systems analysis experience
  • Solid understanding of voluntary benefits / insurance industry preferred
  • Experience working with 1099 sales organization preferred
  • Relationship oriented
  • Working knowledge/understanding of the corporate methodology and a broad understanding/awareness of other methodologies
  • Knowledge of logical data model/management

General Summary

Unum is hiring for a Business Analyst I who will work with the agile team and the Product Owner to define and document acceptance criteria. The candidate will ensure the solutions delivered are of high quality by collaborating with their agile team members and by leveraging/using appropriate elicitation/documentation practices for the team. They are active team members who participate in the estimation of work required to deliver software features.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelors Degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Has 2+ years experience working as part of an Agile Team
  • Knowledge of Rally Agile, Jira or Confluence, SQL queries, & Reporting.
  • Experienece with Visio or Blueworks preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of Agile Development Methodologies
  • Passionate about the business direction, priorities, results, and customer experience.
  • Has demonstrated good analytical abilities

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain a holistic understanding of IT Delivery roadmap and track any changes to the roadmap are aligned in the backlog tooling enabling teams to leverage automated roadmaps and status report, metrics functionality
  • Ensures that Product or adoption KPIs identified can feasibly be measured and tracked within the development and delivery activities, ensuring key data points are identified and included from the outset within the scope of the agile teamwork
  • Maintains a holistic understanding of relevant client personas and uses these personas to refine work items to develop a shared understanding across the Agile Team of the client needs
  • Ensure integrity of work items as they are broken down and refined throughout the hierarchy of work items in the product backlog. Identify where intent may be lost or overlooked during the work breakdown and refinement processes. Ie. Descoping or need for supplementary requirement gathering
  • Collaborates with the Product Owner and relevant subject matter experts to define concise and effective user stories with precise and accurate acceptance criteria for a user story on a just‐in‐time/just‐enough basis that will be used by the team and product owner to ensure that stakeholder and product owner intent is effectively captured and developed
  • Ensure that key information needed to support PO prioritization is current, accurate, and available in a usable format to drive high-quality decisions.
  • Ensure functional and non-functional requirement’s, with appropriate documentation, are represented effectively in the product backlog
  • Ensure that product backlog work items e.g. user stories are meeting the definition of ready/done in line with enterprise targets on backlog readiness, often called planning horizons or planning intake funnel
  • Ensure backlog work item decomposition is meeting enterprise standards with respect to the quality of content and data integrity on key fields to drive transparency and effective reporting. Identify data sources and gather and analyze data relevant to processes impacted by the solutions being created.
  • Fully engages and leverages methodologies outlined in the relevant product areas. Eg. Customer Journey, Agile Methodologies, Program Execution Framework ie. Program Ways of Working
  • Maintains a set of tools and skills to elicit client needs and requirements using appropriate techniques (oftentimes elicitation will require work on artifacts such as Personas, User Stories and/or Story Maps)
  • Determine and use the most appropriate means of representing business requirements in the context of a specific change initiative, ensuring traceability back to the source
  • Demonstrates active engagement and sharing of practices in Business Analyst forums
  • Engages in industry analysis of trends, technology, and market advancements
  • Ensuring documentation and change controls are in place for the production deployment activities and transition to production support technical teams with the Agile Team
  • Collaborates with Product Owners to manage and groom the backlog for the team
  • Review the acceptance criteria with the Team (Software Engineers and Test Engineers) to ensure agreement on testability so the team can drive toward getting the right tests automated to support continuous integration
  • Collaborates with the Team (Architects, Software Engineers, Test Engineers, etc.) to ensure that the team defines, builds and produces features and solutions that meet or exceed what the Product Owner is expecting
  • Completes process mapping and performs Story Decomposition to enable planning at the appropriate level of granularity that supports the just‐in‐time nature of agile approaches
  • Collaborates with the agile team during planning and interacts with the Scrum Master or Team Lead and product owner to agree on sprint deliverables post sprint planning
  • Has detailed knowledge of business processes for assigned business portfolios and has suggestions or ideas on how to improve
  • Gather requirements for the persona of specific user experiences. Completes Information architecture and works with UXD resources to ensure an excellent user experience is delivered
  • Evaluates native functionality from third party/cloud solutions and identifies opportunities to meet business needs also performs configurations including page layouts, workflows, reporting and dashboards
  • Assists the agile team with internal test execution, inclusive of documenting results, managing and tracking defects, and troubleshooting issues that arise out of testing
  • Ensures that the latest project progress is known to the agile team by ensuring Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools are up to date and participating in daily stand-ups outlining progress made, progress planned and detailing impediments
