The engineering and product teams work very closely together to form empowered teams with shared KPIs, that include Subject Matter Experts from other departments in Omnipresent (when that makes sense). Each team decides how it works for itself, and teams have a mix of approaches that vary based on their preferences, the needs of their users and the specifics of the work they are doing. Engineers interact frequently with our internal customers, and occasionally with external ones, to understand what they need from the software, get their feedback on what is being built and work with them directly if something goes wrong. We have maintained an emphasis on technical quality as we grow – ensuring that our software remains refactorable, and is refactored, as we build – so we can maintain a high pace of delivery over time. We have high levels of automated test coverage, a very fast release cycle, and consider refactoring part of the work. We are working on improving the availability of slack time in the team so we can deliver more “quick win” improvements to the product and technology.

Your role

Omnipresent is looking for a Principal Engineer to help bring our customer and internal facing OmniPlatform to life. The Principal Engineer will work closely with the Director of Engineering, Principal Quality Engineer and Heads of Engineering to build a high functioning engineering department. This person will lead our technical strategy, be a leader and mentor to our Staff Engineers, and be a key voice in the direction of the Product, team and how we work together.

  • You would be joining a fast-growing distributed team of engineers, who work cross-functionally with Product and Design to build the OmniPlatform, solve problems and support the needs of our global customers. We write our tests first, and know that delivering quickly requires excellent tooling and ongoing attention to the health of the codebase
  • Lead the development and evolution of our technical strategy, work with Staff Engineers on implementation, and direct high impact, cross department initiatives
  • Be the technical architect for the Product organisation’s most challenging and long-term requirements.
  • Help Staff Engineers turn technical strategy in to actionable architecture choices
  • Mentor Staff & Senior engineers
  • This role reports to the department head, currently the Director of Engineering, and will be a member of the department leadership group alongside Heads of Engineering and the Principal Quality Engineer, with an equal voice and stake in the success of the department
  • Work with leaders in the company to correctly prioritise important technical work, and recognize where we should be investing in the technology for maximum impact

What makes you a fit?

  • Experience in a similarly scoped role as a technical leader
    • We would expect people with this experience to have titles like Principal Engineer, Architect, Chief/Lead Architect, Lead Engineer, or many others
  • Experience with one or more of: distributed systems, service oriented architectures, event driven systems, complex web applications
  • You are technically strong, a good written and verbal communicator, and can transition easily between talking to executives about how technology can meet our goals and pairing with an engineer to solve a bug, and everything in between.
