Position Purpose
Counselors are the primary caregivers and source of enthusiasm for each camper.  The Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out programs and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills, while being a positive role model. See below for more information regarding specialized activity areas available.
Counselors serve a dual role as activity specialists leading activity programming for their girls as well as serving as cabin counselors.

Dates of Employment: May 22, 2022 through July 31, 2021
Full and partial summer available.

Internship available.

Physical requirements of all camp staff positions include prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to utilize camp equipment; requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to live in a camp setting and work extended hours; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, horses etc.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attend all in-person training sessions.
  • Ensure campers are properly supervised at all times, including sharing cabins during nighttime.
  • Ensure daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  • Actively and enthusiastically participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
    • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Lead and assist in teaching of activities, and support skill progression at all times: day, evening and cabin time.
  • Oversee completion of kapers/cleaning tasks as necessary, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, bathrooms, etc.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to Coordinator Team.
  • Choose 1 or more specialty activity area to develop skills and/or obtain certification.

Specialty areas:

  • Arts & Crafts: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of arts and crafts activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.  Assists in the management of the arts and crafts building and related equipment and supplies. Develops and delivers arts and crafts program that is appropriate for the age and ability pf the campers. Should be familiar with various types of arts and crafts including, but not limited to: ceramics, friendship bracelets, painting, wood burning, tie-dye, drawing, etc.
  • Lifeguard: furthers the mission of the camp by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s aquatic activities. Assist in the management to the physical operation of the aquatic facilities and equipment. Should be American Red Cross or BSA Lifeguard certified or willing to participate in the training. Maintains aquatic equipment and reports any issues to camp maintenance staff.
  • Outdoor/Camping Skills: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of outdoor skills activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.  Assists in the management of the outdoor skills equipment and supplies. Should be familiar in topics such as, but not limited to: shelter building, backpacking, hiking, water filtration, knots, knife safety, outdoor cooking, Leave No Trace, fire building, orienteering, etc.
  • Cooking: furthers the mission of the camp through development and delivery of cooking activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.  Assists in the management of the cooking/kitchen equipment and supplies. Should be familiar with cooking techniques for both indoor and outdoor cooking, and baking.
  • Environmental Education: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of nature or environmental activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities and reflect the camp’s commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. Should be familiar with native Florida wildlife and ecosystems. (At Wildwood, will be tasked with the care and maintenance of the live animals in our Griffin Nature Center. At Wai Lani, will be tasked with the care and maintenance of the Marine Lab)
  • Archery: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of archery activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities.  Assists in the management of the physical operation of the archery and related equipment. Should be certified in archery or willing to obtain certification through USArchery.
  • Waterfront: (Camp Wai Lani only) To further the mission of the camp through assisting in the planning and implementation of swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle board activities at the camp’s waterfront. Develop (with the help of the Waterfront Coordinator) and deliver activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Assist in the care of the waterfront’s facilities and equipment. Should be Small Craft Safety certified or willing to obtain.
  • Challenge Course (Camp Wai Lani only) To further the mission of the camp through assisting in the planning, implementation, and the safe operation of Challenge Course activities. Facilitators will guide participants through self-discovery challenges and facilitate problem solving.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to interact and relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in assigned program areas.
  • Knowledge and acceptance of beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout movement; willing to register as a member of Girl Scouts of the USA.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Full Job Description

PURPOSE: To create and deliver Girl Scout Program for assigned troops/groups and serve girls in identified underserved areas of Girl Scouts of West Central Florida jurisdiction. This includes serving as a role model and mentor while providing age level appropriate in-school, after-school, and summer program for girls, grades K – 12.

REPORTS TO: Outreach Management

The schedule includes working directly with girls Monday through Friday, and occasional weekends. Weekday mornings are spent in the Girl Scout office working on program preparation and site communication. Afternoons are dedicated to direct program delivery at multiple sites. Sites are located throughout Pinellas County including but not limited to Clearwater, Largo, Lealman, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg and Tarpon Springs. The primary funding for this position is provided by the Juvenile Welfare Board.

Primary Duties

  • Deliver the Girl Scout National Program Portfolio curriculum; enriches and supplements, as needed, to assigned grant-funded programs.
  • Act in the capacity of Troop Leader at sites where adult volunteers are not available and delivers the developed curricula and activities to assure girls receive the full benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
  • Ensure that all girls participating in the programs offered by Girl Scouts of West Central Florida are registered with GSUSA.
  • Collect all appropriate girl registration documentation.
  • Organize and and execute recruitment strategies for girls and adults such as lunch talks, parent meetings, and community events.
  • Recruit and register girls in designated sites.
  • Recruit, register and support adult volunteers.
  • Ensure girl registrations are complete and accurate.
  • Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all staff, volunteers, parents, and interested parties.
  • Conduct parent meetings and secure family interests, wherever possible.
  • Develop new and enhance existing network with other leaders in the youth development field, local community organizations, and non-profit sector to identify new opportunities for innovative collaborations and programming.
  • Organize and execute beginning and end of year ceremonies for girls in all troops.
  • Assist in the planning of enrichment and encampment trips for girls.
  • Ensure proper implementation of pre- and post-surveys to measure program quality.
  • Performs special assignments and/or other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-4 year college degree majoring in Education, Social Work, or similar field preferred.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Experience observing or working with children in a learning environment.
  • Strong awareness of societal influences on all girls, especially those living in high risk conditions.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to continue education in girl behavior and societal patterns affecting girls.
  • Must be flexible to change and willing to work in a diverse and energetic environment.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with internal data collection methods or systems and using measurement tools to assess program participation.
  • Ability to generate accurate and timely internal management reports and to respond to reporting requirements by funders.
  • Ability to utilize creativity and flexible systems to initiate ideas and plans, make decisions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to recruit, work cooperatively with, and motivate adults from various social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, both individually and in groups.
  • Ability commit to a flexible time schedule, including evenings and weekends, and work effectively in varied venues.
  • Automobile necessary, along with documentation of required automobile insurance and safe driving record.
