Gilead Gilead Sciences has an opportunity for an experienced candidate in Biologics Technical and Manufacturing Operations at our Oceanside facility in Southern California. We are seeking motivated, team oriented individuals with expertise in purification operations and technical transfer of recombinant proteins. You will have the opportunity to work with the early and late stage clinical development of our protein molecules.  The qualified Sr. Associate I will perform hands-on execution of all aspects of purification operations in pilot plant, process scale up/scale down, and potential GMP manufacturing support.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work effectively within pilot plant to serve as a subject matter expert during purification operations
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and lead implementation of best practices to support process transfer activities to internal and external manufacturing sites
  • Monitor and evaluate purification process performance data, report and present findings, and proactively seek out senior personnel to discuss potential solutions to problem, and research new methods and technologies that can advance purification platforms
  • Collaborate with the Process Development, Manufacturing, and Technical Operations in technology transfer from process development to clinical and commercial GMP manufacturing, including definition of bill of materials, batch record drafting/review, and discrepancy resolution. This is a highly collaborative environment where willingness and ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals across various teams is essential

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

  • Hands-on execution of all aspects of pilot plant purification
  • Assist in operations associated with cell culture, including but not limited to preparation of cell culture media, monitoring and sampling of lab and pilot scale bioreactors
  • Work with increasing level of independence in the initiation and execution of development studies, material generation and toxicology runs
  • Order raw materials, ensure availability and maintain accurate inventory
  • Independently write batch records, summaries and reports
  • Plan and execute experiments and studies, analyze data and present results of work
  • Implement and troubleshoot processes, instrumentation and equipment.
  • Identify alternatives, research new methods and techniques and proactively seek out senior personnel to discuss potential solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to compliance and a thorough knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs)
  • Always works with safety in mind.
  • Act as an effective and committed team player

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • BS degree in a relevant scientific discipline and 3+ years of experience; OR
  • MS degree in a relevant scientific discipline
  • Preferred degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry or a related scientific discipline
  • Experience with downstream process operations including centrifugation, normal flow filtration, chromatography operations, tangential flow filtration, and virus inactivation/removal
  • Ability to demonstrate a significant level of hands on experience in several of these areas is expected
  • Relevant experience that demonstrates expertise in purification process development
  • Sustained excellence in performance and accomplishments that align with company goals
  • Selects appropriate methods and techniques; must be able to research new methods and technologies
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize anomalous and inconsistent results and interpret experimental outcomes
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and technical) and interpersonal skills are required
  • Must be able to work effectively in teams
  • Self-motivated, organized, and enjoy scientific investigation and thinking

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Locates and diagnoses failure, replaces defective components and performs basic troubleshooting using standard electronic equipment, detailed drawings, diagrams, sketches, specifications, prints, manuals and verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Maintains appropriate maintenance and repair logs.
  • Uses a variety of hand, power and test tools and equipment.
  • Provides general maintenance support as designated by supervisor to include any or all of the following areas: Process equipment; HVAC equipment; Purified Water; Packaging Equipment.
  • Coordinates maintenance on critical systems/equipment with supervisor.
  • Performs multi-shift work as required.
  • Maybe required to open deviations, assist with root cause analysis and participate in the deviation process until closure.
  • May be required to perform the duties of Maintenance Tech I and Tech II as required by supervisor.
  • Required to respond to emergency notifications via phone.
  • Creates and/or revises standard operating procedures for maintenance operations as required
  • Comply with safety and environmental rules and regulations applicable to the operations.
  • Submit environmental, safety, and property damage near miss and incident reports and participate in investigations and corrective action identification.
  • Maybe required to participate in projects and be  involved in project improvements.
  • Provide training to the group on safety and maintenance.
  • Maybe required to update equipment in the asset management system.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Demonstrates extensive understanding and application of maintenance methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience and a high school diploma.
  • Current Leaving Certificate and Trades Certificate. GSL.
  • Previous experience in biotech or pharmaceuticals commercial manufacturing environment desirable.
  • Previous experience working in highly regulated manufacturing environments desirable.
  • Previous experience with initiating and owning quality records such as deviations, CAPAs, and Change.
  • Previous experience supporting regulatory authority inspections and interacting with auditors/inspectors.

Gilead Sciences is looking to hire a full-time Director for its Corporate Development team to lead all clinical collaborations across oncology, virology and inflammation.  This individual will work closely with Corporate Development Therapeutic Area Heads, Gilead clinical leadership and program strategy executives to identify and execute potential combination partnerships for multiple Gilead programs across the portfolio, including sacituzumab govitecan-hzy (Trodelvy), magrolimab and GS-4875 (TPL2).  He or she will also partner with scientific and clinical leadership to develop combination strategies for programs within each of Gilead’s core therapeutic areas.  The candidate will report to the Executive Director of Corporate Development, Oncology and be part of the core Corporate Development team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead execution of all corporate development opportunities involving strategic partnerships for portfolio assets
  • Partner with key stakeholders, including corporate development, clinical and program strategy leadership, to identify rationale combinations for key Gilead programs across all TAs
  • Engage with partner companies and develop business proposals to enable transactions
  • Coordinate diligence efforts and scientific reviews for identified opportunities; review opportunities and business cases with Gilead management
  • Lead negotiations of term sheets and contracts with identified partners
  • Oversee junior members of the corporate development team who will provide support on key transactions

Desirable Skill Sets

  •  Strong knowledge of biotech/pharma industry and clinical development required
  • Significant experience leading transactions and strong familiarity with negotiations and the contracting process
  • Capable of balancing multiple priorities with minimal oversight
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams
  • Aptitude for quantitative analysis such as forecasting and valuation work

QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Minimum education and years of relevant experience, including experience in biotech/pharma sector and/or professional services (e.g. consulting, finance, legal, and/or corporate experience in a relevant function)
  • B.S./B.A. + 8 or more years of experience
  • M.B.A./Masters + 6 or more years of experience
  • J.D. + 6 years of transaction specific experience and industry knowledge
  • Experience managing, negotiating and leading biotech transactions, including strategic collaborations
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and presenting business cases to executive management
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required
  • Passion for science and therapeutic clinical development
