Purpose: Provides the practice and delivery of safe, effective, ethical and culturally competent emergency care to patients of all ages in emergency situations who require stabilization and/or resuscitation as a result of illness or injury. Responsible for overseeing the daily operation when the Manager and/or Charge Medic are not available. This includes support for management of human, fiscal, material and environmental resources in accordance with hospital guidelines, organization/EMS philosophies and in compliance with regulatory and professional standards. Key accountabilities include fostering interdisciplinary collaborative relationships; making decisions in patient care/triage; ensure smooth shift operations; facilitate a seamless transition for the next shift that includes exchange of essential information; active participation in quality monitoring and performance improvement activities; promote evidence-based practice through research utilization or conduct of practice research. Performs technical procedures according to GMC Ambulance protocols and function within their Scope of Practice in accordance with the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of EMS.

Supervisory Responsibility: Guidance: The job requires the provision of occasional guidance and training to others. The job does not have formal or official supervisory responsibilities.

Materials Responsibility: Very Limited. Work requires very limited responsibility for material resources. Examples of resources could include personal work materials, supplies or equipment, or very small amounts of cash. The employee has a very limited or indirect amount of control over these resources. Although human error might require the repair or replacement of materials, usually the cost of correcting these errors is minor. The variety and volume of resources is also very limited. POSITION SPECIFICATION

Education: High school plus additional course work up to 1 year

Field Of Study: Emergency Medicine

Special Training: Basic Life Support, ACLS

Training Preferred: Associates Degree; Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP); Critical Care Paramedic (CCP); Emergency Vehicle Operators Course

Licensure/Registration: Licensed Paramedic in IA and IL (employees hired prior to 5/21/2017 have one year to obtain second state license); Valid Driver’s License.

Experience: Less than 1 year experience required.

Interpersonal Skills: Interaction is with a variety of people inside or outside the organization. Communications are often difficult or stressful in nature. Contact with others involves complex, detailed and often sensitive topics. The job requires a high degree of interpersonal skills to deal with a range of complicated problem situations. The purpose of this position is to respond to emergency situations and provide skilled emergency and non-emergency services in a variety of areas including emergency medical and rescue operations, advanced medical assistance, directing ambulance and first responders in patient care services, mentoring, training, quality improvement, public education, and recruitment. The incumbent would provide supervision and care of patients in the pre-hospital environment including the utilization of monitor/defibrillators, numerous medications, endotracheal intubation, IV therapy, and other associated tasks; perform critical basic and advanced life support procedures according to medical protocol; and perform independently in situations involving both basic and advanced life support activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Direct subordinates, including first responders, EMT’ and advanced EMT technicians in the provision of medical care; work seamlessly with both career and volunteer personnel; and exercise leadership and motivate subordinates to provide quality service.

2. Administer basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene, in-route to the hospital and in the pre-hospital environment in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, protocols, regulations, and standards.

3. Safely operate emergency ambulances and other light duty emergency medical response vehicles responding to emergency and non-emergency transports as directed by the Communications Center.

4. Attend classes and perform those activities required to familiarize and maintain currency with the proper practices and procedures of emergency medical services to affect an efficient delivery of services.

5. Assist in the rescue and extrication of victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques.

6. Responsible to communicate with additional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and/or to arrange reception of patients to the appropriate center.

7. Report to work at the scheduled time in the appropriate uniform, ready for work.

8. Respond to emergency calls in a professional and prompt manner; providing high quality patient care.

9. Complete a full check sheet for assigned vehicle(s), assuring the ambulance and first response vehicles are stocked fueled and ready to respond to the next call.

10. Report any day to day incidents, equipment malfunctions, or supply shortages in writing to the duty supervisor prior to the end of your shift

11. Assure controlled substances and medications are always secure.

12. Adhere to and follow all policies and procedures concerning safety and contamination by bloodborne pathogens.

13. Be familiar with the county treatment protocols and company policies and SOG’s.

14. Attend meetings mandated by the Director of Operations.

15. Maintain confidentiality of all patient, staff, and Genesis Community Ambulance matters, following all HIPAA regulations.

16. Perform chores for your shift, cleaning, doing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, mopping, emptying trash, and other related assigned maintenance duties in the station.

17. Conduct yourself in a professional manner following the three P’s of Genesis Community Ambulance, Pride, Proficiency, and professionalism.

18. Operates specifically equipped emergency vehicles at a safe and controlled speed, in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations and standards.

19. Properly document all reports for service in accordance with State and Local procedures, rules, and regulations. Complete and upload all PCR’s prior to or at the end of the shift.

20. Check, restock, inventory, and clean any equipment operated by the crew or on the ambulance.

21. Perform other duties as requested by management not necessarily relating to emergency medicine and patient care duties.

22. Participates in departmental quality improvement activities as assigned.

23. Undertakes and maintains projects as assigned (to include research).

24. Assume command of scenes involving multiple patients or complex incidents until relieved by a supervisor or manager and perform assigned leadership roles within the incident management system.

25. Acts as a preceptor and/or participates in orientation of new employees and students as assigned.

26. Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.

27. Participates in continuing and outreach education programs as requested.

Additional MICU responsibilities: In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Paramedic job description, MICU Paramedics are also responsible to handle transports of the most critical patients to the hospital, or to and from facilities as needed. In this capacity, the MICU Paramedics may have to start IV’s and administer medications that would not normally be included during regular emergency transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Requires high school diploma or equivalent.

2. Successful completion of an accredited paramedic program and State of Ohio certification.

3. Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be eligible for driving privileges based on current Genesis policies and procedures.

4. Maintains CME responsibilities per state guidelines for certification to include BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ASLS certifications.

5. Attend an annual advanced airway refresher and skills check off.

6. Attends a minimum of six educational programs per year pertinent to his/her practice.

7. Must read, comprehend, and follow written and verbal instructions.

8. Must read and understand English.

9. Good interpersonal and communication skills.

10. Ability to assess situation needs and problem solve.

Additional Qualifications for MICU Paramedics:

In addition to the qualifications already outlined in the Paramedic job descriptions. the following is also required for MICU Paramedics:

 · Two (2) years-experience as Paramedic

· Must follow State approved protocols and procedures within the scope of the Critical Care License, including maintaining required/recommended certifications.

· Participates in continuing education classes, seminars, workshops as directed by the designated Medical Director.

Purpose:

Responsible for coordinating all patient registration activities including greeting patients/families, processing patient registration in an efficient and courteous manner, obtaining accurate patient demographics and insurance information, pre-registering patients, contacting precertification agencies when appropriate, obtaining all necessary consents and serving as the initial point of contact for patients coming into Genesis Health System. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following: registering patients who present to the ED for ED services, registering patients who present to the hospital for ancillary testing outpatient procedures or hospital admission, verifying insurance benefits, collecting appropriate deposits and co-payments for services and making referrals to the Insurance Verification team as needed, providing medics and clinical staff any necessary admitting documentation for the ED patients and discussing payment arrangements with patients when appropriate. These task must be completed in compliance with HIPPA, EMTALA, CMS and JCHAO guidelines and regulation. The Admitting/ED Registrar is expected to complete these duties while providing exceptional customer service and maintaining complete adherence to the Standards of Behavior of Genesis Health System.
