Full Job Description
Cornerstone Building Brands is looking for a Supplier Quality Engineer to join its team. This position will have the opportunity to create, support, and implement various new projects related to all aspects of supplier management. This includes sourcing, supplier approval/assessment/management, supplier and component rationalization, assessing supply continuity risk, implementing business interruption plans, supporting/creating global commodity supply chain strategies, and optimizing product cost.
This role is a remote position and will require ability to travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Determine Needs: Use specialized knowledge to work with Product Design, Product Marketing, and Business Unit Operations, and Commodity Leaders, to assess product and business needs and then determine what supplier has the capability, machinery, components, and supplies needed to efficiently, competitively, and safely operate. Review any engineering changes that impact material or supplier and recommend accordingly.
- Choose Suppliers: Provides strategic analysis of suppliers to identify, select appropriate suppliers to ensure Cornerstone’s competitiveness (Cost, Quality, Delivery, Innovation). Does extensive industry research, meets with current and prospective supplier representatives to compare products, services, execution, and cost structure.
- Manage Suppliers: Responsible for managing supplier performance in terms of quality, cost, delivery, and responsiveness. Periodically review suppliers and launch improvement programs where required. Actively search for ways to eliminate waste and variability in the supply chain.
OTHER DUTIES
- Provide technical support to Purchasing for supplier and component consolidation
- Develop and implement detailed plans for transfers/supply of products and components including the sequencing of event, i.e. equipment, inventory, skills required and transfer of materials (when appropriate).
- Create strategies to effectively rationalize the current supply base by implementing processes and applications to streamline inventory as well as the implementation and/or maintenance of lean manufacturing concepts.
- Evaluate suppliers’ internal functions to assess their overall performance and provide feedback assessment of their operations through the use of robust scorecards
- Develop supplier business continuity/disaster recovery plans
- Maintain healthy business relationships with suppliers.
- Create and take ownership of supplier development plans
- Coordinate with Engineering, Production and Quality departments to ensure new supplier components meet fit, form and function.
- Identify and address supplier problems and opportunities, performing the necessary investigation, planning, develop proposals for approval and execution of the plan to bring the projects to successful completion.
- Identify and investigate opportunities for cost reduction and/or quality improvement through the development of outsource and in-sourced partnerships, performing the necessary research to source, evaluate, and select outsource partners, and performing the cost justification analysis to secure approval.
- Convert “improvements” into SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Result-based, Time Bound) and present as quarterly objectives.
- Create detailed project plans (concept through implementation) for each cost reduction goal indicating date cost will be recognized.
- Work closely with suppliers to understand and improve manufacturing methods or process control in attainment of cost reduction goals.
- Continually monitor critical path for assigned projects. Inform sourcing team/project leader if targets are exposed and what is being done to bring the project back on track.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, mechanical engineering, business, or related field.
- 5+ years of purchasing experience with technical/fabricated items and raw materials or prior experience in an operations related or technical role within manufacturing.
- Detail-oriented and a strategic approach.
- Able to integrate technical knowledge with business acumen.
- Must work well independently and be committed to innovative thinking to achieve results.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with personal computers and networking, specifically Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to analyze bills of material and drawings to understand key requirements.
- Ability to identify cost reduction opportunities.
- Advanced engineering skills helpful.
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed (moderate travel required around 40%).
