Director GTM Strategy, Global Partners & Transformational Partners (GPTP)

The Director GTM Strategy is one of the key leaders in the Strategy, Planning and Operations organization supporting VMware’s Global & Transformation Partner organization, driving accelerated growth with our most important OEM and Channel Partners across the portfolio and accelerating solutions in VMware’s most strategic areas, including our SaaS and subscription transformation.

The Director will be responsible for leading and supporting the development of go-to-market growth strategies, assessing current performance & sizing opportunities for growth, required investments and key enablers.  In addition, the Director will support quarterly Executive business reviews, evaluating progress against plans & opportunities.  This role offers the opportunity to develop long term strategy as well as guide near term operational performance against priorities and plans.  The Strategy, Planning & Operations team develops close working relationships with internal (VMware) stakeholders as well as external Partners to drive growth.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Within 30 days of employment, complete all the onboarding formalities and learnings, meet the stakeholders at VMware and begin to establish relationships with each functional lead as well as the Senior Leadership for the GPTP team.
  • Within 60 days of employment, you will gain an understanding of growth plans of record, historical performance and focused priority initiatives and progress.
  • Within 90 days of employment, you will have established working relationships with the functional leadership teams in the GPTP and with key Partners, and participated in projects identifying areas for growth, improvement and/or efficiencies.
  • Within 180 days of employment, you will own driving discrete growth strategies & plans and developing insights and required actions based on YTD performance evaluations and developing a leadership voice in the SPO and broader GPTP organizations.
  • Within 360 days of employment, you will be key leader of the GPTP SPO team, defining priority execution initiatives, driving collaboration & shaping team culture, mentoring talent as well as owning and executing specific initiatives.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Support the Senior Director and other leaders in driving the development of strategic plans, including annual operating plans and key strategic initiatives
  • Structure and lead complex strategic projects and initiatives supporting them into the execution
  • Develop strategies & business plans with clear goals, execution plan and metrics
  • Actively connect and collaborate with VMware & Partner Business Unit leaders
  • Engage with Sales and Go To Market leaders to secure commitment to plan goals, investments and key enabling initiatives
  • Actively identify execution impediments and drive resolution
  • Defining Key Performance Indicators, monitor performance and drive corrective actions
  • Interact and communicate with various levels in the organization from individual contributor to SVPs and C-level executives

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This role will report to the Senior Director, Strategy, Planning & Operations, Frank Fontani, who’s role spans across VMware’s top OEM Partners and Transformational Partners within the VMware channel organization.  Frank believes in a team first and together approach, where team members work collaboratively and free of silos to support the functional needs of the business in an efficient and proactive manner.

The GPTP is chartered with working collaboratively with key Partners to drive VMware revenue and solutions through all routes to market.  This is a high visibility team at VMware and this role shapes the growth agenda for VMware’s WW Partner & Commercial Organization (WPCO).

Accountabilities and Performance Measures:

  • Achievement of GPTP sales plans and strategic priorities
  • Accountable for development of Annual Operating Plans and/or translation to Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and performance scorecards
  • Accountable for Executive quarterly business review updates
  • Accountable for defining & supporting implementation of high-priority initiatives, tracking status, identifying blockers and driving resolution cross-functionally
  • Accountable for shaping & facilitating key Executive decisions in support of strategy

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years post-MBA experience, preferably in the technology/software industry
  • Top strategy consulting/corporate/GTM strategy experience, with relevant industry experience
  • Ability to drive consensus and execution across teams, organizations & company cultures
  • Strong passion for technology, with understanding of technology landscape
  • Good blend of strategic thinking, financial planning, and implementation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving and influencing skills
  • Superior communications skills, with ability to synthesize for Executive decisions
  • A strong preference will be given to candidates with direct OEM or Global Partner experience

Where is this role located?
Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within a reasonable non-daily commute of the office.  Preferred location is Central or Eastern time zone.  Some travel required.

VMware’s Modern Application Platform Business Unit is looking for a passionate engineer to deliver VMware’s strategic offering, VMware Tanzu Mission Control.Tanzu Mission control (TMC) is a new cloud service (SaaS), part of the VMware Tanzu Portfolio. Mission Control gives customers a single pane of glass for all their Kubernetes cluster needs so they can monitor, verify, apply policy, back up, and restore with ease. What are the primary needs, technical challenges, and problems you will be responsible for?

As a Staff Engineer and Tech Lead of the Policy team, we expect you to:

  • Partner with the Leadership and product team to establish a vision and a roadmap for the data model and authorization and access management (Role-based access management (RBAC) and Authorization (AuthZ)) for TMC and the fleet of Kubernetes clusters.
  • Provide technical leadership for the team focused on the TMC resource and data model for and access management.
  • Scope, Design, Plan, and Build a highly scalable and high-performance platform and solutions to meet customer and internal partner team’s data model and RBAC requirements.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from partner engineering, product, security, infrastructure, and operation teams.
  • Act as a role model for fellow engineers by establishing and improving engineering standards and processes.
  • An empathetic leader who coaches and mentors other engineers in the team.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Within your first six months

  • You understand the vision, architecture, and data model of the Tanzu Mission Control backend control plane.
  • You will have a good understanding of Kubernetes policy management (RBAC, Network, Pod security policy, and OPA)
  • You are expected to produce software designs that define and extend TMC’s resource model, RBAC, AuthZ service APIs, and related infrastructure. These interfaces must meet VMware and industry standards and provide a consistent programming model across multiple programming languages.
  • You will be expected to design, implement, test and deploy microservices developed in Go.

After six months+

  • Take ownership of the TMC data model, authorization, and access policy management and lead the team of exceptional software engineers to implement cloud-scale solutions.
  • Work with product and leadership to evaluate, prioritize and provide solutions for customers and partner service teams.
  • Representing the team and product in cross-team design discussions, identifying dependencies and areas of impact.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As part of the Tanzu Mission Control – Policy Team:

  • Most of your time will be developing microservices using cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, gRPC, REST APIs, databases, message queues, distributed tracing, monitoring, and more. All of our services are written in Go.
  • You will write automated tests in Go to validate and secure critical customer functionalities.
  • You will be responsible for delivering your code changes to production and monitoring/maintaining our CI/CD pipelines.
  • You will take on-call responsibilities where you will triage, troubleshoot, and mitigate production issues.
  • Work directly with Technical Project Managers and Product Managers to better understand requirements, and define the scope of work
  • You’ll be given responsibility for high-level epics, and be asked to help define requirements and tangible deliverables. You will be expected to break down the work into individual work items that can be assigned to the team and lead in estimating and scoping.
  • You can expect to collaborate with partner teams to identify dependencies and align on delivering cross-team initiatives.
  • You’ll work closely with management to understand priorities and advocate for them on the team.

Suresh currently leads the Policy and Resource manager team, consisting of 12 engineers distributed across the US. The Policy and Resource manager team delivers many of TMC’s core features, including Access Management and Kubernetes Policy Management.
